The Situation

JoVE is a B2B video library serving healthcare institutions, research labs, and universities. 1M+ learners across 1,800+ institutions. JoVE Coach was their entry into B2C: an AI-powered learning platform for individual students and professionals to access microcourses, earn certificates, and interact with JoVE’s video content through a chat interface.

The Problem

The initial build had gaps that needed more than patches to fix. A basic chatbot with a video pane. Zero mobile responsiveness. Quizzes buried in the chat stream. Users auto-enrolled into courses before expressing any intent. The code was broken at multiple interaction points. JoVE needed to start over.

What We Built

01

Dual-mode interface: doubt mode for quick answers, microcourse mode for structured learning

02

Intent-capture nudges guiding casual browsers into course enrolment organically

03

Custom design system with non-standard UI elements built specifically for the platform

04

Full cross-device responsiveness. 3-column layout with fixed 16:9 video across all devices

05

7-day freemium conversion window designed to drive paid plan uptake

The Outcome

User testing post-launch showed an estimated 70–80% improvement in clarity and simplicity scores versus the previous version. The platform now works as it should: across every device, for every type of learner.

The previous team treated every user the same. We rebuilt the product around how users actually think.
